Pistoia is an absolute delight often not as well know as other towns in Tuscany. It lies in the tourist heart of the region, not too far from Florence, Lucca and Siena, but tends to get missed out by travellers. The town is less monumental than Florence, less ancient than Siena and less complete than Lucca yet Pistoia is a gem. All the ingredients of an old Tuscan city are there -paths full of churches, cloisters, palaces, museums and monuments that revolve around one of the most fascinating Cathedral Piazzas in Italy.
Pistoia was named the Italian Capital of Culture in 2017 and is a city of Roman origin. It’s a relaxed place with more locals than tourists, which makes sightseeing a much more calm affair. A day would probably be enough to see the main sights, but you might want to remain in this town longer to visit the lively market or explore its churches.
