Orbetello is a slim peninsula located in a lagoon off the Tuscan coast. The Maremma region of Tuscany is an area of unspoiled beaches, nature reserves and archaeological areas. Pine forests line the shore.
The village of Orbetello is completely pedestrianised, making it a very safe and delightful place to wander through the narrow streets while soaking up the atmosphere and sun. There is a piazza which has plenty of choice of restaurants and cafes and the main street has many local individual shops. The harbour has always been an important trading port.
Sights to visit include the cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, a simple Gothic church constructed in the 1300s that houses splendid frescoes. The Spanish Castle is a fascinating fortress which also has a butterfly garden and forest in the grounds. An old stone Spanish-built circular windmill stands surrounded by water as a beautiful backdrop.
The Maremma is particularly known for its natural landscapes and hosts many hiking trails and nature parks. It is ideal for bird watchers and cyclists. Orbetello is also great for water sports too.
